Sustainability

At Pure Cruise, we are committed to sustainable tourism that safeguards the natural beauty of Lake Rotoiti and its surrounding environment. Through partnerships with iwi and eco-conscious practices guided by the principles of kaitiakitanga (guardian and protection), we strive to protect the lake, land, and community for future generations.

Waste minimisation and Eco-Friendly practices

We reduce landfill impact by sorting waste and recycling paper, glass, cans, cardboard, and plastics wherever possible. Bins are provided both on board and at our jetty to make this easy for guests and crew. We avoid single-use items — choosing reusable containers, service ware, and encouraging guests to bring refillable drink bottles. â€‹

We also limit unnecessary packaging by purchasing consumables in bulk and selecting environmentally friendly products for cleaning and onboard use.

Our menu offering is thoughtfully designed to reduce over-catering and food waste.

Energy Efficiency & Clean Cruising

Our modern vessels — including purpose-built, fuel-efficient catamaran hulls — are designed to glide smoothly across the water while consuming less fuel. Each vessel is also regularly serviced and maintained to ensure optimal performance, safety, and environmental efficiency.

We operate at carefully managed, comfortable cruising speeds to reduce fuel consumption, minimise disruption to the lake environment, and protect local wildlife — especially the iconic dabchicks. Unlike high-speed operations, we prioritise a gentle journey that preserves the tranquility of Lake Rotoiti while offering guests a more immersive and enjoyable experience.

We're actively developing an electric-drive commercial vessel to help reduce emissions. Our aim is to minimise landfill waste by reusing automotive parts, supporting a circular, low-impact approach to marine operations.

Guardianship ( Kaitiakianga) & Voluntary Initiatives

Our crew actively support voluntary initiatives such as dabchick counts and rubbish collection in remote bays—turning every charter into an opportunity to care for the lake and inspire our guests.

For 14 years, we’ve partnered with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to care for boat-access-only reserves around Lake Rotoiti.

We are also members of the Lake Rotoiti Ratepayers Association, supporters of the Te Arawa Lakes Trust, and active in the Okere Care Group, which focuses on local wetland restoration and pest control efforts.

Supporting Community & Culture

We believe sustainability extends beyond the environment to supporting people. Our entire crew is trained in our environmental policy and empowered to uphold sustainable practices every day.

We buy local and support Rotorua’s vibrant tourism, conservation, and cultural communities.

The Tiaki Promise

Pure Cruise supports the Tiaki Promise — a national commitment to care for Aotearoa New Zealand, now and into the future. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, we invite you to join us in respecting the land, protecting the waters, and acting as guardians of this beautiful region.
