MĀORI HISTORY & CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCELake Rotoiti is the location of the ancestral lands of Ngati Pikiao, hapu of the Te Arawa tribe. The significance of this area lies in its important historic and scenic values.
Lake Rotoiti’s waterways were used as the main channels of trade, travel and warfare for Ngati Pikiao throughout history and over time, the lake has come to hold the culture of its people within its’ folds. Rotoiti is home to significant Maori burial grounds and sacred caves rest around the lakes shores. Ancient pa (village) sites are positioned in strategic strongholds around the lakes hills and peninsulas.
A rich Maori culture still exists here today, with Marae (meeting houses) of the major sub-tribes of Ngati Pikiao in existence around the lake offering a cultural place for local communities to meet.
